25 Good Reasons Why Psychiatry Must Be Abolished

by Don Weitz

1. Because psychiatrists frequently cause harm, permanent disabilities, death - death of the body-mind-spirit.

2. Because psychiatrists frequently violate the Hippocratic Oath which orders all physicians "First Do No Harm."

3. Because psychiatrists patronize and disempower people, especially their patients.

4. Because psychiatry is not a medical science.

5. Because psychiatry is quackery, a pseudo-science which lacks independent diagnostic tests, testable hypotheses, and cures for "schizophrenia" and all other types of alleged "mental illness" or "mental disorder".

6. Because psychiatrists can not accurately and reliably predict dangerousness, violence, or any other type of human behaviour, yet make such claims as "expert witnesses", and with the media promote the "dangerous mental patient" myth/stereotype.

7. Because psychiatrists have caused a worldwide epidemic of brain damage by promoting and prescribing brain-disabling treatments such as the neuroleptics, antidepressants, electroconvulsive brainwashing (electroshock), and psychosurgery (lobotomy).

8. Because psychiatrists manufacture hundreds of "mental disorders" classified in its bible called "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (a modern witch-hunting manual); such "mental disorders" and "symptoms" are in fact negative, class-and-culturally-biased moral judgments for dissident ways of coping with personal problems and alternative ways of perceiving, interpreting or being in the world.

9. Because psychiatrists, blinded by their medical model bias, fraudulently pathologize and label people's serious life or existential crises as "symptoms" of "mental illness" or "mental disorder" such as "schizophrenia","bipolar affective disorder", and "personality disorder".

10. Because psychiatrists compound this fraud by falsely claiming, without scientific proof, that these "mental disorders" are caused by a "biochemical imbalance" in the brain, genetic factors or "genetic predispositions", despite the fact that there are no genetic factors in "mental illness".

11. Because psychiatrists frequently misinform their patients, families and the public by claiming that brain-disabling procedures such as the neurotoxins (e.g.,"antipsychotic medication" and "antidepressasnts"), electroconvulsive brainwashing (electroconvulsive therapy/"ECT"), psychosurgery (lobotomy) and other behaviour modification-mind control procedures are "safe, effective and lifesaving". The exact opposite is tragically true.

12. Because psychiatrists routinely deceive or lie to patients, prisoners, their families, and the public.

13. Because psychiatrists routinely and willfully violate the medical-ethical principle of "informed consent" by misinforming or not informing their patients about the numerous toxic, disabling and frequently permanent effects of the neuroleptics such as memory loss, tardive dyskinesia, tardive psychosis, parkinsonism, dementia (all signs of brain damage), and death.

14. Because psychiatrists routinely threaten, intimidate or coerce many patients - particularly women, children, the elderly, and prisoners - into consenting to health-threatening/brain-damaging "treatment" such as the antidepressants, neuroleptics, electroconvulsive brainwashing, and hi-risk experiments.

15. Because psychiatrists frequently fail to fully inform psychiatric inmates and prisoners about existing safe and humane, non-medical alternatives in the community such as survivor-controlled crisis centres, drop-ins, self-help or advocacy groups, diet, massage, wholistic medicine, affordable supportive housing, and jobs.

16. Because psychiatrists are sexist in frequently stereotyping women in crisis as "hysterical" or "over-emotional", blaming women whenever they voice real complaints and assertively express their feelings and emotions, prescribing massive doses of tranquilizers and antidrepressants to disproportionately large numbers of women, and in sexually assaulting women in their offices and institutions.

17. Because psychiatrists, particularly white male psychiatrists, are homophobic - the American Psychiatric Association (APA) once labelled homosexuality as a "mental illness" or "mental disorder" - and have used forced electroshock on lesbians, trying to coerce them into adopting a heterosexual life style.

18. Because psychiatrists are ageist in prescribing tranquilizers, antidepressants ("medication") and electroconvulsive brainwashing for disproportionately large numbers of elderly people - a form of elder abuse.

19. Because psychiatrists are racist in disproportionately incarcerating and drugging people of African descent, aboringal people, other people of colour and labelling them "psychotic" or "schizophrenic".

20. Because psychiatrists routinely violate people's civil rights, human rights and constitutional rights such as imprisoning innocent people without court trial or public hearing ("involuntary commitment"), and subjecting them to cruel and unusual punishments or tortures such as forced drugging, electroconvulsive brainwashing, psychosurgery, solitary confinement, "chemical restraints", and 4-point or 5-point restraints.

21. Because psychiatrists masterminded the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people including disabled children, the elderly and psychiatric patients during The Holocaust in Nazi Germany, and "selected" hundreds of thousands of concentration camp prisoners for death ("T-4 euthanasia" program) - historical facts still missing in psychiatric textbooks and histories.

22. Because psychiatrists have willingly participated in and administered mind-control experiments in the United States and Canada since the early 1950s - its chief targets have been poor patients, women, dissidents and prisoners.

23. Because psychiatry, particularly institutional-biological psychiatry, is based on the 3 Fs: Fear, Fraud, and Force.

24. Because psychiatry is a form of social control or punishment - not treatment.

25. Because psychiatry, particularly institutional-biological psychiatry, is fascist - a direct threat to democracy, human rights and life.

Let me add one to the list here:

26. Because psychiatry of all medical fields and professions have the most practicing atheist - "Psychiatry plays God, instead of recognizing they are at the mercy of God"

Addendum: there is an interesting debate going on over at - http://www.furiousseasons.com/archives/2009/04/david_healy_slaughters_the_biomythology_of_bipolar_disorder.html - in the comment section from a resident psychiatrist about how "God and Soul" do not exist, and have no valuable part in psychiatric treatment or in the healthy lives of the inflicted.

Interesting reading and some food for thought!

that's the site on the blog roll to the right that has that article on their home page.

the 3 F's are so true:

Fear-break the person's spirit

Fraud-the medication treatment paradigm

Force-forced treatments, injections, and days on a court order to remain in house locked up.

That is how the game is played in psych wards especially.

Helloooo! It's not just in the Mental Health field. It's every where now. We have met the enemy and it is us. They have pushed and pushed the Socialist we know better than you cum ba ya my lord agenda in to our Colleges and Universities for years. Well folks we have gotten what you voted for. The most socialist, fascist, non representative government that we have ever had. And guess what? You ain't seen nothing yet.

And remember what Comrade Emanuel said. "Don't let a good crisis go to waste" even if you have to create one.

I don't agree that all psych docs are bad. There are some good ones...somewhere. Surely, there has to be a few even though I've not come across them after over 20 years of treatment for bipolar. Finally, after all that time, I figured out how to get the treatment that I want in the amount that I want. I had a really drug physician's assistant who was eager to help me. Just a young kid, mind you. She ended up referring me to a regular doctor that was willing to listen to and work with patients. Together we have experimented and found what drugs I need AT THIS TIME. She accepts the fact that I know more about my brain than she does. She, also, accepts the fact that I DO know what works and what does not. She was at first alarmed that I told her...NO MORE ANTIDEPRESSANTS at this time. Instead, I am just taking Adderall and have fooled around with the amount needed. My mind does not feel clouded all the time now. This is not to say that I will never need psych meds again. But, I now have the say in when, what, how much, and how long.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Dear TPB and anyone else that cares to read this:

Right out of the gate, I will be clear and honest here as possible.

I don't believe the drugs that are touted today fix anything, and at best they are a short term stop gap measure with very mixed and unpredictable results. This makes them not only a crap shoot by their very nature, but quite dangerous indeed.

The more I learn, the more I research, the more I probe, the more lives I see ruined, the more I see the truth behind the lies, the more I find untruth heaped upon mountains of other untruths in psychiatry and this industry. This corruption is the very grounding and foundation of psychiatry; which is nothing more than a drugging theoretical modality.

Let us remember the DSM; which is their Bible, and not the word of a higher power, was created to foster this drug modality from the very beginning.

So even though after years of futile experience with these so called medications; I found them to be both physically and emotionally damaging, as well as completely ineffective as a treatment for any emotion based problems.

I do not believe in the bio-myth, chemical imbalance, or the genetics theories; because there is no proof or even logical data pointing science in this direction, just pure human speculation.

I still respect and trust in personal choice though. So if a person has full informed consent, knowledge, and believe any drugs helps them; Then they should have the right to follow their heart and soul in making this informed choice.

Yet, in saying that; I do believe we live in a time and society that wants quick and instant gratification. So this makes the myth just that much more attractive. For if change is all a person is looking for, changing their own brain chemistry with harmful drugs is sure one way to go about. But then they should be fully aware with easy fixes, comes personal responsibility and the living or dieing results at the end of day.

In psychiatry the real results speak for themselves. Not only have they never cured a single person (in fact their careers and business need people to stay unwell to flourish and stay alive), but the treatment and approach they use actually causes more damage than good.

Why? Because their very livelihood depends on them being right; whether they are right or not!

This quote speaks volumes and sums up psychiatry "there is no money or business in healthy people"

There is great status and monetary gain in the business of fixing peoples broken minds. But the fact is they have never fixed anything. They are definately not in the business of fixing anyone bruised soul, traumatic experiences, or broken hearts; which is accepted fact without much debate.

They don't even do a good job explaining why they are doing what they are doing. They are believing in the God of science. Yet psuedo science they use is anything but reliable or god like.

I personally believe a bigger faith and power is ultimately in charge and can guide are way to health and freedom from blessed madness.

But with faith must come patience and hard work, time is not the ingredient we can measure healing by. Though this journey has proved worth the effort for the few that choose to follow this road truly less traveled.

Psychiatry is not about informed choice. They are not about real power, unless it is power over others and their journey. They use drug as the weapon of psychiatry's choice, and unjustly force or creatively manipulate millions upon millions of people each and every day.

Some are children that should have never been placed on any psychotropic drugs in the first place. They only needed a listening ear, a voice that was heard, direction given, limits set, lots precious time given, and love, lots and lots of love. psychiatry is not equipped or able to give any of those gifts or true medicines.

In my mind psychiatry and the drug modality is a travesty and crime against society and are very humanity.

I could go on and on. But I will let it rest here for now.

A mental Health Consumer Provider’s experience working on two Programs of Assertive Community Treatment
After an accident I was disabled for five years. During this time I received Social Security Disability Income and counseling. I joined a club house in Newton Massachusetts for vocational counseling. After volunteering there I got a temporary employment placement. I did janitorial work on two days each week for two hour shifts at some group homes. On one night each week I attended a vocational support group to discuss issues related to the job. After this I found a part time telemarketing job. This independent employment was a step in the right direction. I had an excellent college education and had difficulty getting hired. I thought this could be related to having been disabled. Employers are careful in hireling people and this can exclude people who can do the job but have been unemployed. I was grateful that a program was available in my community to help disabled people get jobs. Being excluded from the work force creates a unique poverty of the soul. I vowed that someday I would help disabled people with finding jobs.
A year and six months into my recovery I got a residential counselor job working with individuals called mentally retarded. I slept overnight three nights. This was an excellent situation for someone with depression. I got off public assistance and was self supporting, productive and responsible member of society. After you worked for a year at the agency you were eligible for tuition reimbursement. I took advantage of this and enrolled in the U Mass Boston’s Rehabilitation Counseling program.
After taking one course a semester for a few years I moved into a therapeutic community where I worked as a counselor with mental health clients. Working in a supportive environment as a counselor and learning about mental health counseling helped me grow as a person and nurture the growth of people I worked with. I worked in this position and studied rehabilitation counseling for five years. After I earned a Masters in Counseling I got certified as a rehabilitation counselor.
Then I took a job with a Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) in central Massachusetts. I was able to advocate for clients and help them with a lot of problems. I liked the fact that we did outreach and helped clients where ever they were. This type of work brought me to homeless shelters, schools, work places, hospitals, jails and client’s homes. The psychiatrist and staff were supportive. Because the program was associated with a University teaching and learning were emphasized. I received good performance reviews over my four years of employment. I handled numerous crisis situations effectively. I helped clients to find jobs.
After four years I was offered a better paying position at another PACT. I had twelve years experience and not one complaint on my record. I moved near to *** to take a position as a Vocational Counselor with a PACT in *** at **** . The company was merging with ****. This was because *the company* had committed fraud in billing Medicaid and the director of rehabilitation stole from clients. I understood that the company was in transition. I was confident in my ability to help clients and I knew I had a good work ethic and thought that would be enough to succeed. No one new I had a disability when I took the job. I had the experience of being on an effectively operated PACT. This experience was needed because the program had problems.
After taking the job I saw that clients were not getting services they needed with housing and employment. Clients needed help. Staff would say that clients were to “symptomatic” to benefit from help with these important issues. Staff treated clients in a condescending manner. I raised my concerns about client treatment with A*** the new program director. A*** did not have the required credentials or experience to manage the program. This program was designed to serve the most disabled and vulnerable mental health consumers in the area. The response I got was “mind your own place and business”. I could see his approach to management was to bully subordinates, use intimidation and push people around. For example he and another manager would co supervise a counselor while A*** sat at a computer taking notes like it was a disposition. You never knew what was being written. I asked if I could take notes during a meeting but was told this was not allowed. I do not respond well to this approach by a manager.
In my first month of employment I was asked to take a client to get a toxicology screen. The test results could get the client in legal trouble. I thought that this task was a bad idea for our first meeting. I found out latter this client had been charged with attempted murder. I was not told about his background but just to take him to get tested. I refused to do this. This is just one example of a number of problems where clients and staff were put at odds because of poor management. (Reports to DMH never told what was going on.) In a PACT program clients are often under court order to get treatment and have the program manage their money. The only way to be sure clients are not coerced and staff is acting ethically is for there to be effective communication between all staff and management. However this was not possible at the *** PACT all communication was one way. A*** gave orders and expected staff to obey his orders without question. It was as if the clients weren’t people but animals to be feed anti-psychotic medications. A*** the program director would say “I have to micromanage everything”. If a team meeting was going on counselors were expected to raise there hand and ask permission to go to the bathroom. We were in team meetings ten hours a week.
The work place became hostile. I think it was because other staff saw that I advocated for clients in meetings and management felt threatened. I got the “you aren’t fitting in talk” from the manager. Then I got a written warning that threatened termination. This was for late paper work. Some of the paper work was the program directors **** responsibility. I explained that I had dyslexia and I asked for some extra time to complete the paper works. I advocated for my self and asked for the accommodations that I am entitled to under the American’s with Disabilities Act. Other than this minor issue I had demonstrated leadership in important matters. I helped client’s find jobs and housing. I managed crisis situations. My request for more time to do paper work was denied by A***.
Then after a client in crisis did not get help from management in a timely manner a blame game started. I had brought the client in crisis to meet the manager. I got blamed because this client who needed to be hospitalized ended up driving in ***. This happened after I warned the manager that he needed help. A staff person from the day program was in his car. He could have crashed his car into someone. But I was blamed for this management neglect. I filed two grievances with the SEUI union. Management ignored them. I developed health problems as a result of the stress I was under. The management created a hostile work place. I even got treatment for job related stress. I let A*** and M*** a senior manager know I was being treated for job related stress. The work place got more hostile. I requested time off but this was denied. Even though I had a doctors note as evidence that I had job related stress and both vacation and personal time.
Basically I was thrown out like the trash. The reason was because I advocated for clients, workers rights and would not accept unethical behavior by management. *** management contested my unemployment claim. At hearings M*** and A**** committed perjury. After four hearings the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training found I had an urgent and compelling reason for ending the job. I was paid unemployment compensation. *** management also refused to pay me for my last two weeks work. I went to small claims court and named *** the Human Resources Director in my complaint. I had an excellent case but the hearing officer was a **** court clerk named ***. Without considering the facts I lost my case.
Because of all this I lost my health insurance and couldn’t continue treatment. Now, I can not get a good job because I do not have a reference from my last employer. My health problems have not been treated. I am applying for Social Security Disability. I found management’s main interest was in misleading the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health about how the PACT was operated. Ethical issues were not to be discussed. Dishonesty and hostility were the foundations of management’s practice. They treat counselors like dogs and laugh at the SEUI union.
Signed,
Dog Meat
