I guess it goes without saying you believe your son has a "highly genetic biological brain-based disorder" and "Psychiatric medications are a healthy part of a balanced lifestyle for the majority of children with childhood bipolar disease, a serious but treatable medical condition" or childhood psychosis. (you can correct me if I'm way off base with that assumption)
I mean psychosis is just like a terminal cancer or diabetes in your view correct? You have done the cost/risk/outcome analysis.
As I have seen with many propagandized parents from the NAMI, BPDKids brainwashing. You go out and about spouting the greatness of drugging children.
Could it be you have chosen to not open your eyes to the wealth of knowledge available leading to very different conclusions, refused to consider the growing arsenal of dire consequences being uncovered, or questioning to what has now being shown over and over again to be the growing body of evidence to a dangerous, failed, and deeply flawed medical modality related to mental health issues especially for children.
But there is one golden shiny nugget that is always used against parents like yourself; there is little personal responsibility assumed once you have the biological disease to blame.
That mountain of guilt can begin to melt away once you grasp the belief you had nothing to do with this happening to your child. Once you have that in hand, the need to believe it is your choices and complete control that will save your son are firmly entrenched and seldom questioned.
I have to wonder how your son will feel down the road when those nasty side effects take control of his life and leave him quite possible permanently disabled.
How heart broken will you feel at that juncture in the journey I wonder. I happen to personally know parents that are facing that very reality. Now you want to talk about the burden of guilt they carry for what they were told was the only rational option.
Those doctors, drug companies, and support groups don't have to look into their child's eyes and assume responsibility for the damage done; the parent can not avoid this painful truth and haunting each and every day.
Please ask JC and many others like him how a parent/parents/doctor spoon feeding them drugs without informed consent or choice given in their developing lives fostered a cure, gave wellness, instilled hope, and brought them quality life. I fear you will not like and accept what you will hear from them.
Yet, you without doubt believe you have all the correct answers. All the doctors with the aid of some supposed advocacy groups have verified them to be truth with the help of these great trusting pharmaceutical companies.
In my own personal opinion this could be a very hard landing when all those people you trusted prove to be wrong at your son's expense. I honestly hope this doesn't come to pass in your case.
I can only assume you believe it's worth the gamble.

"Absurd. And who is going to pay for that in practical terms? Who is even going to bother? We all know the answer to that."
Absolutely Absurd it is: Who's actually going to pay for those permanently disabled from metabolic problems including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, adding in drug created mental health issues, TD related movement disorders, as well as many other serious health issues related to this out of control psychotropic drugging culture.
The answer is not really rocket science after all: We all will pay not only in a huge financial burden; but also in the tremendous human suffering and toll brought upon society for not taking a strong stand against greed, corruption, dubious science, and a medical modality that has failed us over and over again.
Unfortunately the child, adult, and elderly victims are already paying this tragic price each and every day.
Posted by: MsPiggy at November 5, 2009 10:42 AMDoes an individual willing to strap a bomb to them selves or decide to go on a shooting spree killing and injuring innocent citizens genuinely suffering from stress and internal conflicts.
I would certainly hope so; but once you bring a "Jihad" mentality into the equation, it creates a conundrum of sorts. Does faith and corresponding actions (even at this radical extreme) qualify as a mental illness. (If so, then maybe are bombs should be made up of pharmaceutical chemical restraints, instead of more certain and explosive devices)
There is little doubt there many diverse opinions and arguments both for and against the war on terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and in the general so called "Muslim" world.
What is the rational solution to this declared "Holy War"? Do we as America just pull back from Iraq and Afghanistan at this juncture, hoping for the best outcome. We know this would leave us with no assurances of peace; while catastrophic cost in both life and liberty are looming on every horizon.
What would happened if this was "NAZI" Germany we were referring to here instead of Muslim extremist with an argument of inaction. It would realistically not be regarded as a ridiculous assumption to say I would be typing this comment in "German" today.
Though even in those turbulent times (what we most consider today to be just and necessary war) there was some fairly strong public opinion and influential elements opposed to America getting involved in that war also.
I would suppose that some here truly believe that if America backed down and stopped all military actions against this "Jihad"; it would stop or curtail further violence and attacks upon Western Civilization and Culture by these extremist.
I wonder what it will take for those against overseas actions against extremism to wake up to the reality of this war. No matter how unpleasant, futile, costly, and never ending this effort may appear.
Will it actually have to take a nuclear or bio-chemical weapon causing mass causalities on American soil for attitudes and opinions to change toward this relentless enemy.
Or will a full scale nuclear conflict involving Israel be enough to open every eye to this juggernaut of opposing cultures and philosophies in our world today.
Terrorist inflicted violence upon Western and American targets has been going on for decades now. I assume "911" and related attacks around the world were not enough for many to conclude we have a determined, committed, and relentless enemy to deal with now.
Maybe those that maintain the massive conspiracy theory mentality and it was "Bush's War" will never accept that there are times when War and Violence are the less desirable, but an absolutely necessary measure to ensure each of us that always precarious possibility and fragile opportunity for some reasonable as-semblance of peace/safety from these often brutal and totalitarian oppressors/aggressors.
My opinion continued to be; This Hasan walked like a "duck", talked like a "duck", took the actions of a "duck", and was swimming in the duck pond with other "ducks"; He's what you call a "DUCK".
Yet there will always be those that call him a "pig" in spite of the evidence.

Interesting? The Visitor must live on some other planet
This apologist seems to believe Doctors are some sort of infallible Gods that are not influenced by greed (pharma pay offs), marketing (Here's a nice weekend golf trip on big Pharma's tab, "now take this pill and push it") misinformation and propaganda (skewed studies and ghost written lies being passed off as science), and a whole host of other unsavory and unethical behaviors.
Any doctor out there willing to stand up and admit publicly they just "SCREWED UP"; while letting greed and misinformation cloud their judgment. It's always lots of tired old excuses that among to nothing more than recycled BULLSHIT.
I personally trust the medical profession at this juncture about as much as I trust government and Obama's health care lies; with great suspicion and guarded skepticism.
Maybe when I see convicted felons like huge PhARMA Corporations doing some serious prison time; and our government stops doing business with these criminal entities; my mind possibly could be swayed once more.
Posted by: MsPiggy at September 12, 2009 08:37 AMI can't hardly believe this! You mean AZ and other PhARMA corporations outright lie and deceive the American public; while the FDA stands by and does absolutely nothing.
Obviously government needs to pass more laws to protect those poor corporations from justice. We need this evil gravy train to keep rolling down the tracks for our economy to remain strong after all.
Maybe a second trillion dollar stimulus plan and total preemption is now in order for Big PhARMA.

"It's irresponsible to spread hype about a vaccine's supposed effects in a single person and feed the brushfire"
Opinion:
I think we all have been waiting long enough for drug companies and medicine as a whole to clean up their act. Trust is an earned commodity that has been long lost by blatant outlandish greed and corruption.
When you (PhARMA)/medicine/believers) stop the assembly line of poisons, and admit guilt for generations of crimes committed against humanity; you then can cry out how unfair this criticism might be.
Just maybe at that juncture you can come out in public and ask people not to point fingers and doubt all your ghost written lies, tainted research, pimped toxins, and greed mongering.
Until that time you are all held in constant ridicule and contempt; while viewed always with great suspicion.
Now go tout your magic vaccine to people that don't know better. This is not the only death related to this vaccine that was marketed as a forced safeguard on both young girls and boys with no real proof of long term effectiveness.
I clearly see how PhARMA plays this deadly game. It's always profits first and foremost; then we (PhARMA) might pay a small pittance for the dire and severe consequences later if they can ever make it to court.

Posted by: MsPiggy at September 29, 2009 08:44 PM"but what is wrong with that?"
Because NAMI continually has misrepresented itself. They call them selves "The Nation Alliance for the Mental Ill"; and yet they are any thing but.
When you are completely corrupt, lie over and over again, use misinformation campaigns while doing the bidding of a greedy criminal industry both on the ground and with lobbying efforts.
( Just Google "NAMI" and you will see titled articles like this over and over again "NAMI promotes misinformation" even from PsychCentral type sites. )
The argument that they supposedly do a few good works at the grass roots level doesn't really hold spit at this juncture.
If you actually think this is just at a the national level; let us see this wagon's circle get even tighter as they are forced to report PhARMA money at the State Chapter Level also.
Hopefully your "stick your head in the sand" approach with NAMI won't fly with the "Grass Roots Members" and the General Public; So in time this horrible front for corporate greed will fall to the wayside as many other corrupt entities have in the past.
Who will take their place you might ask:
If good and right are to prevail in the end; organizations resembling MindFreedom, Alliance for Human Research Protection, and like true advocacy organizations will step up and fill this void.
There is little doubt NAMI, DBSA, and like organizations have created, and left behind huge piles of tainted burning ash that will have to be cleaned up and discarded over time.

Posted by: MsPiggy at October 27, 2009 07:58 AM"It's more complicated than that. For severe mental illness, psychotropic drugs are akin to cancer chemo-therapeutics"
Simple answers for your complicated paradox:
Psychotropic drugs amount to little more than a chemical restraint of the mind, and are not a targeted or effective treatment. There is no proven biological test to scientifically verify any serious mental condition within the "DSM" diagnostic statistical manual.
So you some how make a stand on forcing treatment upon people that have no confirmed biological disease with dangerous and damaging drugs without any proof that a real disease is present or can be abated.
NO ONE has ever been cured of severe mental illness by these archaic drugging means. Masking is not by definition a treatment; unless you believe make-up covering a wound, pimple, or wart is considered a cure or preventative treatment.
Your cancer analogy is completely ignorant and total fantasy at best; or shall we place cancer patients in a drug induced coma and call it treatment now. Maybe we should use chemo drugs to treat the common cold; since that is exactly where this type of argument leads when taken to its logical conclusion.
Fuller Torrey believes mental illness is viral; introduced by cat matter in our environment, and anti-psychotics are anti-viral drugs.
If this is the case, (he admits to having no evidence what so ever; but fools buy into this crap out of pure desperation I suppose) then we should demand real science and proof before forcing wholesale treatment in a rational society.
To follow along with Torrey, his blind, and dangerous followers; we would be currently suffering an out of control pandemic that would force treatment upon everyone with these anti-viral psychotropic drugs to prevents insanity from rampaging throughout America and the World.
I gather it's a tad bit to late at this juncture; since obviously Fuller Torrey and his gang of the insane "drug them all demons" have already been infected with this potent viral disease with a very poor prognosis for any meaningful recovery.
Such a truly sad and side splitting day in modern psychiatric history.
Posted by: MsPiggy at November 6, 2009 10:50 AMLet me premise this following response with the fact that the death of any loved one is both tragic and painful. Most here know this experience personally and are empathetic to the loss and pain that goes with such incident.
"Schizophrenia killed my mother"
Since you have chosen to pull your personal misery card here. "Take that pill or you will die" argument.
Let's delve just a little bit into your bedrock conclusion.
Was "Schizophrenia" listed on the death certificate as cause of death. I personally have never heard or seen "Schizophrenia" used as cause of death. (maybe I need to be enlightened)
So I might ask what was the actual cause of death?
I would honestly like for you to show and prove how this "Schizophrenia" killed your mother?
Was she institutionalized, drugged, labeled and treated as diseased. Did she suffer TD or any related effects from so called treatments. these are just the mention a few of the many possibilities including suicide.
Now these kinds of interventions do have to power to make it more likely to injure or kill a person of both of body and soul. I hope you have taken that possibility into consideration.
Have you asked those that frequent this forum wearing that label "Schizophrenia"; how those drugs, others making their life choices, and institutionalization helped them?
I'm not going to say that there are not instances where a person may have to be restrained for dire safety reasons. Yet, chemical restraints are still by far the most intrusive form of control we use today.
Now, Is it painful to watch a person you care and love suffer. Absolutely and without any doubt; I have personally been to that place with loved ones.
Yet, to add to this suffering through chemical restraint that does not remove or treat the underlying emotional condition in reality, is just adding insult to injury.
"Could you look at someone you love who was loving and rational turn truly crazed and hallucinating and say they are not diseased?"
Absolutely Yes; I have done this as a matter of fact.
"But sometimes those lousy drugs are the only things available to treat an even lousier mental affliction"
That is your own opinion and judgment working in that statement. I find it somewhat dumbfounding in truth to say: I know the treatment is bad and doesn't work, but what the hell; let's throw the whole damned kitchen sink at this emotional turmoil whether it's beneficial or not.
Just maybe before you think you know better for someone Else's life, and take a turn at playing second to god; don't you think you should consider their rights, opinions, feelings, wishes, other less intrusive alternative possibilities as the predominant factor in actions that will effect their mind and body.
Just presenting another view. Take it with a grain of salt if you wish.
