I don't imagine for one moment that something so simple swung it, but they didn't like the patients being characterized as "inmates," based on WSH's "treatment" paradigm, did they?

Nothing is ever simple in this broken and corrupted system; though I imagine an ongoing JACO review, public pressure, and a Herculean effort on the part of the family did after much delay get her released.

It's not like there was rehabilitative treatment involved, since that does not happen with the inmates at Western. They pretty much drug, fail, and then use it as excuse to drug some more. A very sad situation.

[shrug] I guess she's well out of there, then. They need to look at their staffing, though - if they've got people who think that the routine use of aggression is the way to handle vulnerable people, then WSH has a real problem, and the sooner they acknowledge that "mentally ill" (to the extent that that term means anything at all), doesn't mean the same as "mentally retarded" (to the extent that that term means anything, either!), the better.

It's a political move, to clean house before the accredidation comittee and internal state audit people show up. When a hospital needs its accrediation as all do, they don't want to be hearing about patients kept there over a year against their will, with multitudes of protocol breach as part of that patient's care in the file. If that patient was there while the internal inspectors walk through and talked, imagine the results. They cut her loose, which the advocacy worked---they did not want bad press.

Now if the internal audit state people only looked under that new entry way mat at the entrance of the place they might find dirt.
